Jill Friedberg has been exhibiting her work for almost four decades, since her days at Northwestern University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an early member of ARC, an artist cooperative founded in Chicago during the women's movement, and her work has since shown at the Tucson Museum of Art's Arizona Biennial and been added to the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. Her current Inheritance series builds canvases in layers, sometimes more than 30 of them, combining manipulated photographic images with acrylic paint and repurposed materials: palm bark, textiles, feathers, laundry lint, wood and pencil shavings, glass beads. Each piece takes at least a month to finish. In her own words, she invites the viewer “into a reclusive world of unbridled imagination,” where emotional desires, dreams, and unique experiences take shape in intense color and skewed perspective.
